Welcome to the Big Sandy Area Development District's office for Transportation Planning

This office is contracted by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to facilitate and coordinate the Big Sandy Regional Transportation Planning Committee as well as fulfill several other aspects of Transportation planning in the Big Sandy Area.  Some of these include but are not limited to; review and submittal of new transportation projects to the Transportation Cabinet and assisting the Cabinet with localized issues including environmental justice studies for future projects.

The Regional Transportation Planning Program exists to aid local and county governments in communicating their transportation needs to the KYTC, but it also allows the public to voice their concerns, questions and needs to the KYTC, and their local/regional/state elected officials, through their participation in and representation on the regional transportation committee. It is through this body that a region’s “vision” begins becoming a “reality”.

Statewide, ADD Transportation Planners are collecting data for existing bicycle and pedestrian facilities in incorporated cities.  This data includes existing sidewalks, crosswalks, bicycle lanes, and multi-use paths.  This data can be used to facilitate bicycle and pedestrian planning, conduct walkability audits, and identify gaps in the existing facilities.  Click on the link to access KYTC’s interactive map of bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Public Involvement

One of the most active programs this office undertakes is the public involvement element in planning our transportation projects.  Federal regulations now require each state to solicit public input in their transportation programs.  For years before this was mandatory the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet had in place a program with each Area Development District which seemed to plug in easily to the new federal requirements.

LONG RANGE STATEWIDE TRANSPORTATION PLAN

The Long Range Statewide Transportation Plan is a 25-year Multi-modal Plan for Kentucky’s transportation system produced by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and required through the federal transportation reauthorization acts, ISTEA in 1991 and TEA-21 in 1998, SAFETEA-LU in 2005 and MAP-21 in 2012. Federal legislation required that the states produce the first Statewide Transportation Plan by 1995 and should update the document periodically.

Improving Our Region's Roadways

With Summer upon us, the highway districts around the state are beginning much needed maintenance and improvement projects on our highways.  The KYTC and the Regional Transportation Planning Office of Big Sandy Area Development District would like to remind everyone to please use caution when approaching or driving through a project location, be watchful for all workers in the are and to obey the reduced speed limits that exist in project areas.  These simple steps will help ensure the safety of our region's drivers, and our highway district personnel.
